Lately there has been a considerable amount of discussion in the media about
the temperament of terriers. The general public is often warned not to add a
terrier to their household because of the potential aggression factor. The Board
and the members of the New England Terrier Club would like to set the record
straight! Terriers are no more “dangerous” than any other dogs in any of the
Groups recognized by the AKC.
In general they are active, outgoing, friendly and extremely entertaining! They
do, however, require socialization and training as do ALL dogs in order to
achieve APS (Admirable Pet Status).
People desiring to add a dog to their home would be well advised to seek out a responsible breeder, who has years in the
breed they are considering. Avoid an impulse buy at the “Pet Store”; quality is not found there. Avoid ads in the local paper
put there by people new to the breed they are advertising. Potential buyers need to do their homework in not only
researching the breed but also the breeder with whom they are dealing.
The photos included in this article illustrate effectively that different breeds and groups of dogs can AND DO get along
extremely well together. The first is two intact males obviously quite happy in each others company. The other contains 1
male and 4 females all going somewhere together very happily.

President's Message
Finally we have spring!! Yeah!! What a long winter it has been. Hard on the dogs and
on us with no place to run for the dogs and too much shoveling for us!
Our Winter Match was a great success though and very well attended. Thanks so
much to our Match Co-Chairs, Lin Falat and Anne Pelletier. I also want to thank our
judges and the many volunteers who pitched in ringside.
Our Winter Match was our second AKC “B” level match and our first “OB” (obedience)
match, and both have been accepted by the AKC. This means that we have fulfilled
the requirements for the “B” level and we plan to submit the paperwork soon to apply
to hold “A” level matches. Progress is being made!
We have many events planned for the spring and summer and we look forward to
seeing you all come out of hibernation and enjoying the warmer weather!
Come to our upcoming events and enjoy your dogs!
Happy Spring!
Mary
